A Journey to the Unknown

Hi everyone,

Jenny and Shayna here again. We said in our previous blog post that we would be updating you while we were in Addis Ababa however, the internet access was less than desirable!

Our time spent in Ethiopia was eye opening and heart warming. Most of our time in Addis was spent in a community called Koshe. This area is where the trash dump is located; Koshe is Amharic for “trash”. The local people of this community find work in the trash dump by collecting recyclables, metal, and even food. While assessing the needs of this population, we visited them in their homes and observed their daily routines. It was truly shocking how consistently their basic needs were not being met. During our stay, we provided health teaching in a local public school. We taught the children about hygiene, hand washing, communicable diseases and open defecation. We quickly learned how difficult it is to teach basic concepts like hand washing when your target audience does not even have access to water, let alone soap. One morning, 25 women from the community joined us for a prenatal class where we also served a nutritious lunch. While teaching to these beautiful women, the lack of education was clear to us. We felt the impact of our teachings almost instantaneously.

From the minute we stepped off the plane we felt welcomed. The generous hearts of the local people we worked with inspired us daily. They are willing and eager to serve their own people in the most trying of times, and that in itself is why Ethiopia will always have a place in our hearts.

We could write a book about our experience but this is it for now!
